PROVO — Texas and BYU are "very close" to announcing a three-game football series, beginning next season, according to the Statesman in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns and Cougars announced in January a meeting next season at Royal-Memorial Stadium in Austin. Dates for the two future games are yet to be determined, but one of the games is expected to be played in Provo and the other in Austin.

"With BYU's interest in perhaps playing football as an independent, the school is very interested in arranging high-profile games and will play the Longhorns in a home-and-home series on dates yet to be determined after the 2011 game in Austin," the Statesman reported.

On Thursday, BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said he is optimistic that Texas would play a return game at BYU in the near future.

"We're still working out some details of dates," Holmoe said during an address during BYU's Education Week. "That's one of the things we're trying to do — not only going across the country to play in big games, but I also think our fans want to see the big teams here. That's what we're trying to do ... If we have to play two (road) games to get one back, there's only about five teams in the country we'd do that against. I think it's in our best interest."
