Will of people ignored

SHARE Will of people ignored

As I was listening to Red Skelton's oration concerning the Pledge of Allegiance during the recent patriotic holidays, I was struck by his insight on the phrase "… and to the Republic for which it stands …" In a republic, the people are the sovereign authority, not their elected representatives. This Congress and this president seem to possess an identity crisis. As one considers the legislation passed this year, particularly health care reform, the majority of the sovereign people has stood in opposition, yet by hook or crook (reconciliation) the representatives chose to ignore the sovereign.
