VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore outside hitter Bethany Wray had 22 kills to lead the Weber State University women's volleyball team in five-set thriller against a team of Wildcats' alumni on Monday night.
The alumni squad, led by 2009 graduate Chelsea Bair, defeated the 2010 'Cats 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 18-25, 15-12 in Swenson Gym.
Sophomore outside hitter Emily Jones added 12 kills and sophomore middle blocker Carissa Noble had 12 kills and four blocks for Weber State.
"Our defense really struggled in the first two games, but I thought we kind of rallied defensively in the third and fourth sets," Weber State coach Al Givens said. "That's a good team we played. It was good for our younger players to go through this routine once and hopefully get those first match jitters out of the way." Bair had 16 kills and hit .500, while 2008 graduate Leah Harrell had 15 kills and 14 digs for the alumni squad.
For the match the 2010 Wildcats hit .226 and had 10 blocks, all coming in the final three sets. Weber State officially opens its 2010 campaign on Friday at 5 p.m. against the University of Idaho at the Washington State tournament in Pullman, Wash.
