WEST JORDAN — A 23-year-old man was in critical but stable condition with massive head trauma at a local hospital after a car turned in front of him Thursday afternoon, colliding with his motorcycle.

The motorcycle rider was on 7800 South approaching the intersection at 4800 West when a 19-year-old driver made a left turn in front of him, said West Jordan Police Sgt. Jeff Jewkes.

The motorcycle broadsided the rear door of the car, and the rider was thrown 30 feet, Jewkes said. The man's helmet, which witnesses believed was not properly strapped on, immediately popped off his head after impact and was thrown more than 90 feet, he said.

Preliminary reports indicate the motorcycle rider entered the intersection on a yellow light and the car failed to yield, Jewkes said.

The victim suffered a possible skull fracture, he said. He was traveling about 40 mph when the accident occurred.
