Several years ago, AARP lost my support when it denied that Social Security is in crisis. Jay Evensen's recent column ("It's time to take another look at Social Security," Aug. 15) reported that AARP is still saying there is no crisis. How can they keep saying it when the evidence shows that the current system is not sustainable? AARP is doing its members a huge disservice when it gives them a false sense of security.
The ratio of workers to retired people has changed so drastically that there are no longer enough workers to support the system. The government knows that the current system is not sustainable, but our congressmen do not dare make the necessary changes because they would lose the support of a huge voting block, namely AARP and the retired people of America. Evensen concluded by saying, "Young people have much more to fear about old age than just Social Security. They need to wonder whether their nation will be bankrupt."
