DOVER, Del. — Delaware has been granted a waiver from a new federal law designed to protect the voting rights of military personnel and other Americans overseas.
The law requires ballots to be sent to overseas voters at least 45 days before an election.
Delaware and eight other states asked for waivers because the law left them little time to mail ballots for the November election after late August and September primaries.
Delaware elections commissioner Elaine Manlove asked for a waiver as a precaution because the state will have only two days after certifying its Sept. 14 primary results to print and mail the general election ballots.
Manlove expects to mail the ballots on time but wanted the waiver in case there is unexpected trouble with printing them.
