SALT LAKE CITY — Two families were left homeless and their two dogs were killed Friday night in a house fire that broke out near 1400 West and 700 South.

Six children and six adults were living in the home, according to the American Red Cross. The charity organization helped the families with shelter for the weekend and provided comfort kits, blankets and meals.

Red Cross Chapters in Utah responded to more than two incidents per week last year. Nationwide, local chapters of the American Red Cross' help victims of both major and minor disasters.
