'Big Five' play season-openers this week
The Beehive State's "Big Five" football teams are each making final preparations for their 1990 season-openers.
BYU, led by its Heisman Trophy candidate, quarterback Ty Detmer, travels to the University of Texas-El Paso to open defense of its Western Athletic Conference title.
"A conference game is not my idea of a great way to start," says Cougars' coach LaVell Edwards.
Utah, under first-year head coach Ron McBride, plays at Utah State in the nation's 16th-longest major college football series. The Utes' defense held the Aggies scoreless until the waning minutes of their '89 game.
"I mean, they beat us," said USU coach Chuck Shelton. "They called the dogs off."
And Weber State, guided by head coach Dave Arslanian, makes its first-ever football journey to Southern Utah in what will be the schools' last meeting as colleges — both become universities on Jan. 1, 1991.
"It's the biggest game we've ever had at home," said Thunderbirds' coach Jack Bishop. "I hope we can just take it as the biggest game this week."
