VERNAL — One man is in jail, and another is in the hospital following a weekend stabbing.
Police were called early Sunday to an apartment complex at 355 E. 100 North on a report that someone had been stabbed, said Assistant Vernal Police Chief Keith Campbell. Officers found David T. Kaup, 41, of Vernal, inside the apartment with stab wounds to his left side and chest. Another man, Allen Shane Carmickle of Vernal, was also located inside the apartment.
Witnesses told police that Kaup and Carmickle had been drinking alcohol all night and arguing. They said Carmickle, 43, kept hitting Kaup during the disputes, prompting Kaup to choke Carmickle into unconsciousness, jail documents state.
When Carmickle regained consciousness, witnesses told police he told Kaup, "I'm going to get a knife and stab you dead."
The two men continued to argue, witnesses said, until Kaup grabbed Carmickle and shoved him backward. Carmickle's left elbow hit and shattered a glass coffee pot, which cut his arm.
When Kaup released his grip, Carmickle allegedly grabbed a knife from the counter. Witnesses said a struggle for the knife ensued and Carmickle stabbed Kaup "several times."
"At this time, one witness heard (Carmickle) say to (Kaup), 'I just stabbed you, bro,' " jail documents state.
Carmickle's brother disarmed him and called 911. Carmickle was booked into jail for investigation of attempted murder. Kaup was flown to a Salt Lake-area hospital.
