1945 ~ 2010
Phil John Erickson was born on May 13, 1945 in Moscow, ID to Herbert John Erickson and Dorothy Gulden Erickson. He was the third of seven children. He died at home of colon cancer on August 2, 2010. During his lifetime Phil was fortunate to have many opportunities to travel, first in the Army, and then with his wife and children throughout their married life. He loved to travel. He was a geographer; traveling expanded his awareness of different cultures and provided the entertaining and enlightening stories he told to his Salt Lake Community College students. Teaching became his life after 19 years working for Salt Lake Corporation.
Phil's biggest achievement in his working career was his involvement in restoring the City and County Building. It was finally completed and reopened to the public on April 29, 1989 with a gala "Celebrate the City" event. He served on committees for years afterward to ensure that the restoration remained intact. It remains as beautiful as when it was first built in 1894.
I first met Phil in December of 1972 on a date set up for us by
mutual friends. We were married July 14, 1973 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 37 years ago this year.
Our daughter Kate was born April 26, 1979. Our son Todd was born March 7, 1983. Phil loved to travel and having our children made it even more exciting to do so. It was important to help them be citizens of the world; to be accepting of other cultures, learn from those cultures and grow to be strong and independent. Planes, trains and automobiles, but perhaps trains were the most fun.
Our home is just outside Memory Grove which was important to Phil and I. Along with our equally committed neighbors we have seen it rise to beauty even after the devastating flood of 1983 and the tornado which destroyed it in 1999. Our neighborhood is truly a community of friends and has remained so during our 30-year sojourn here. Thank you for all the love and support.
Phil is survived by his wife, Jane; children Katherine Ann and James Todd Erickson; brothers Matt (Mary), Todd (Mary Kay); sisters Anne (Jay) Fortun, Mary Evelyn Erickson; several nieces and nephews; and the most recent addition to our family, Xia, James Todd's wife since July 24, 2010.
Friends may call upon the family at a wake to be held at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East on Tuesday, August 10th from 7-9pm. Online condolences may be offered to the family at
"Camarado, I give you my hand! I give you my love more precious than money, I give you myself before preaching or law; Will you give me yourself, will you travel with me? Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?" -Walt Whitman,
Song of the Open Road
Oh, yes, Phil, I will.
