Mead’s GOP bid rides on outsider status

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Matt Mead has jumped on the political outsider bandwagon despite coming from one of Wyoming's top political families.

Campaigning for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, Mead insists he's the only candidate without a background in state politics despite his service as U.S. attorney for Wyoming from 2001 to 2007. He resigned to try to land the U.S. Senate seat vacated in 2007 and was a finalist for the job that ultimately went to then-state Sen. John Barrasso.

Mead is a grandson of Clifford Hansen, the former Wyoming governor and U.S. senator who died in October. His mother, Mary Mead, ran unsuccessfully for governor before her death in a 1996 riding accident.
