SALT LAKE — University of Utah Hospital underwent a precautionary emergency lockdown around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday after a man carrying a rifle was spotted in the foothills behind the hospital, said Kathy Wilets, a hospital spokeswoman.
Wilets said that somebody reported seeing the person in full camouflage carrying binoculars and the rifle and said that it might have been a hunter. The lockdown was lifted about 6:30 p.m. after she said police believed there was no threat.
University of Utah Police Lt. Lynn Rohland said the nearby Jewish Community Center also went on lockdown. Rohland said police believe the man was probably headed into the mountains to hunt. Hunting season is under way in Utah and hunters are allowed into the area behind the hospital.
Rohland said police would be doing extra patrols Wednesday night.
