PROVO — Sources at BYU indicate that BYU is in the process of signing junior college defensive tackle Marques Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 305-pound prospect from El Camino Junior College in Torrance, Calif.
With Hebron Fangupo graduating and Travis Tuiloma leaving for an LDS mission, BYU was in immediate need of able bodies to man the nose tackle position. Johnson, by most evaluations, is a good fit to play at the nose in a 3-4 defensive alignment.
Johnson reportedly had offers from both Indiana and Washington State before deciding to sign with BYU following an official visit. Johnson, who is originally from Westchester, Calif., had 31 tackles, including 10.5 tackles-for-loss and five sacks last season for the Warriors.
Johnson plans to enroll at BYU for winter semester and participate in spring practices. He has yet to use his redshirt, but aims to contribute immediately for the Cougars.
