OREM — Utah Valley audiences have a unique opportunity to be among the first to see the fast-paced parody version of "The 39 Steps" when Hale Center Theater in Orem opens with the show New Year's Eve.
The classic murder mystery show, based on the book by John Buchan and directed for the first time on film in 1935 by Alfred Hitchcock, has just been released to public and community theaters.
The story starts with gunshots fired at a London music hall and the hero comforting a beautiful, frightened woman who claims she's a spy being chased by assassins. It quickly becomes a convoluted story of intrigue, betrayal and secrets that includes a plot to steal British military secrets.
The show is a parody of the films (there have been four made) and is actually very funny, said director Chris Clark, as opposed to the dark Hitchcock treatment.
The story involves 40 different characters played on the Orem stage by four actors: Jake Suazo, Kelly Hennessey, Carter Thompson and Blake Barlow. Alex King, added to the script by Clark, will provide the various sound effects.
"I have a feeling this will become a favorite to be done by high schools and community theater groups everywhere," Clark said. "I saw it a few times in London on the West End and loved it."
Clark said it's been a bit of a challenge to put the story onto the round stage because there are a number of tricks and maneuvers that usually are hidden from audience view.
For the Hale Center stage, Clark said they're trying distraction and sometimes just plain forgoing trying to hide what is going on.
All in all, it makes for a funny and entertaining show, he said, with amazing character actors in the four cast members.
"It's a fast-paced, sort of whirlwind show," he said. "It's brand new, very funny."
The show was cast in November and put together in the studio across from the main theater building. It won't be brought into the actual stage area until the week prior to its opening date, but Clark isn't too worried.
"We have a very portable set. Everything is on wheels because of all the changes involved," he said. "We're ready."
