Now that the war with Iraq is over, what are the results? We have lost more than 4,400 U.S. soldiers and spent more than $800 billion. President George W. Bush took us into this war with the spurious claim that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, a claim that was disputed by the U.N. investigation team before the war, and a claim that was proven false after we occupied Iraq.
When that claim was discarded, Bush then claimed that the war was necessary because Iraq was a haven for terrorists. When that claim also proved to be false, he then said the war was necessary to remove the tyrant, Saddam Hussein, from power.
But using that premise, we should then go to war with other countries whose rulers are even more brutal and repressive than Saddam was. And now we leave a war-ravaged country that has suffered more than 100,000 civilian deaths and is on the brink of a religious civil war. This war and its results can be attributed directly to Bush. It was a war that was unnecessary.
