SALT LAKE CITY — A Murray man has been charged with burglary and aggravated assault after police say he broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment, attacked the woman and threatened to kill and rape her.
Police say Randy James Elizondo Jr., 43, on Nov. 21 went to the apartment where he used to live with his then-girlfriend and asked if he could come in because he was cold, according to charges filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court.
The woman told police she allowed Elizondo to enter but that he became violent "after drinking some beer" and threatened to rape and kill her, the charges state.
Elizondo went into the kitchen and soon returned with a large fork and knife, according the charges. He threw the fork at the television, shoved the woman into a wall and then threw the knife at her, the charges state.
Elizondo took the woman's cellphone to prevent her from calling police, according to the charges. The woman fled her apartment and called police from a neighbor's house. When she returned, she found that her cellphone had been broken and her purse was missing, the charges state.
Early the next morning, the woman was awakened by the sound of Elizondo breaking into her apartment, climbing through her kitchen window, according to the charges. The woman fled to her neighbor's house again and called police, the charges state.
This time, the man took with him a "suitcase full of shoes," the charges state.
Elizondo has been charged with single counts of burglary, a second-degree felony; aggravated assault and theft, both second-degree felonies; and damage to a communication device, a class B misdemeanor.
He's being held in the Salt Lake County Jail on $25,000 bail.
