As Utah's coaching search enters another week, speculation is now centering on former Alabama coach Mark Gottfried. College basketball analyst Seth Davis fueled things up with a Tweet over the weekend that said he was hearing that Gottfried was the "man to beat for the Utah job." Gottfried, whose name has been in the rumor mill since Jim Boylen was fired earlier this month, coached Murray State to a 68-24 record from 1995-98 and Alabama to a 210-132 mark from 1998-2009. He has taken seven teams to the NCAA Tournament and four to the NIT in his career.

Gottfried, who was an assistant on UCLA's 1995 National Championship Team, resigned as head coach of the Crimson Tide in January of 2009 and is currently an analyst for ESPN.

— On Dec. 30, 2002, Gottfried and his No. 1-ranked Alabama squad dropped a 51-49 decision to Utah in the Huntsman Center.

— Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News points out that 34-year-old Butler coach Brad Stevens has already done something that several high-profile college basketball coaches, including former Utah coach Rick Majerus, haven't accomplished — head coaching two teams to the Final Four.

— Former Utah quarterback Alex Smith is in the news. Newly hired San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh may have violated NFL rules by holding on-field throwing sessions with Smith, the unrestricted free-agent-to-be.

— And finally, The Bleacher Report lists ex-Ute cornerback Brandon Burton as a potential steal in next month's NFL Draft. Burton, who is expected to participate in Utah's Pro Day on Tuesday, is listed as No. 7.
