SALT LAKE CITY — A 34-year-old man who was hit and killed Thursday after being struck by an Amtrak train Thursday was deaf, police said.

The man who police have identified as Joseph Gutierrez was walking on 800 West with some groceries when he tried to cross the train tracks near 60 South around 2:30 a.m. A slow-moving train was also approaching at that time.

Police said the conductor saw the man and honked the horn, but didn't believe the man was going to come onto the tracks.

"(Gutierrez) was deaf and didn't hear the train whistle," Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan said. "He didn't see it coming, because he was at sort of an angle."

When Gutierrez stepped onto the tracks he was hit and killed.
