MT. AIRE CANYON — A hefty theft, both cost-wise and in actual weight, near Millcreek Canyon has police asking for the public's help.

Sometime between the night of Feb. 11 and the night of Feb. 12, a person, or likely group of people, stole eight Mattracks off a Chevy Tahoe and a Polaris Ranger. Four Mattracks devices were taken off each vehicle.

Mattracks look like the types of tracks used on tanks and are used for vehicles traveling on packed snow.

The four Mattracks on the Tahoe weigh 450 pounds each and cost an estimated total of $27,000, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. The four Mattracks taken from the Polaris cost approximately $6,000, he said.

The vehicles were parked in Mt. Aire Canyon, between Millcreek and Parleys canyons.

Hoyal called the theft very "unique" for his department and noted that the Mattracks shouldn't be very hard for the public to identify. Anyone with information on the theft of the location of the Mattracks can call police at 801-743-7000.
