Mother of twins in toxic truck charged

MIAMI (AP) — The mother of a 10-year-old girl who was found dead in an exterminator's truck in Florida was charged Saturday with murder, and faces numerous other abuse and neglect accusations.

Carmen Barahona was arrested in the death of Nubia Barahona, the Miami-Dade Police Department announced nearly three weeks after the girl was found in the pickup along Interstate 95 in West Palm Beach. She was wrapped in plastic and had been doused with a toxic chemical.

Her twin brother, Victor, was in the front seat, critically burned by a chemical, authorities said, and their father was lying on the ground nearby, unresponsive. Police said the father doused the boy with a chemical so toxic it sickened rescue workers.

Authorities haven't said how Nubia was killed.

Carmen Barahona also faces seven counts of aggravated child abuse and seven counts of child neglect. Her attorney didn't immediately respond to an e-mail, and police refused to elaborate on what led to the charges. The head of the police department was expected to talk to the media Monday, according to the agency's news release.

Daughter of WWI vet wants Capitol honor

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The daughter of the longest-living American to serve in World War I urged lawmakers to let her father, Frank Buckles, lie in the Capitol Rotunda to honor all the war's veterans.

"There is no one left," Susannah Buckles Flanagan wrote in a statement to The Associated Press. "If we lost the opportunity to bestow this highest of honors on the person who was the last surviving representative, there can be no making it up later."

Buckles died Feb. 27 at age 110.

Leaders in Washington have been divided over how to best honor Buckles and the 4.7 million other Americans who served during World War I.

West Virginia lawmakers want to see him lie in the Capitol Rotunda, and are upset with House and Senate leaders who have objected.

Flanagan, 55, said her father wanted to lie in the Rotunda after his death — not as a personal honor but in memory of all veterans of World War I.

"He looked upon this as his final duty, which he took seriously," Flanagan said.

"If the last American soldier surviving is not suitable to serve as a symbol around which we can rally to honor those who served their country in the Great War, then who can serve that purpose?" she said.

Lying in honor — called lying in state in the case of elected U.S. officials or military officers — has occurred only 30 times since Sen. Henry Clay was the first to be recognized in 1852.

Murder charge levied in pastor's death

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Police say a man has been arrested and faces a capital murder charge in the slaying of a Texas pastor at his church.

Arlington police said Saturday that 24-year-old Steven Lawayne Nelson was arrested and faces a charge of capital murder, which carries the death penalty. Authorities did not immediately provide details about Nelson or his arrest.

It was not immediately known if Nelson had retained a lawyer.

Authorities say they have found the car stolen from NorthPointe Baptist Church after Thursday's attack but would not say where it was located. The vehicle was owned by a church employee who was severely beaten in the attack, which police previously said may have been a robbery gone wrong.

Nearly 100 people gathered at a prayer vigil outside the church Friday night to remember the Rev. Clint Dobson.

Feds say ex-judge should get prison time

ATLANTA (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a former federal judge who pleaded guilty to two drug-related charges involving a stripper should serve at least 15 days in prison.

Prosecutors asked for the punishment for former veteran judge Jack Camp. They said in court documents Friday that prison time will reflect the seriousness of the offense.

Camp is seeking probation, a fine and community service when he is sentenced next week.

Camp resigned in disgrace from U.S. District Court in November when he pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge and two misdemeanors.

The 67-year-old says his decades-long battle with depression and a bicycling accident that caused brain damage led him to use drugs and start seeing a stripper.
