INDIANAPOLIS — Jantel Lavender and Samantha Prahalis each scored 23 points, leading Ohio State to a milestone 84-70 victory over Penn State in the Big Ten tournament championship on Sunday.
The Buckeyes (22-9) have won three straight tourney titles, tying Purdue's record from 1998 to 2000. They also broke the Boilermakers' scoring record in a championship game. Purdue finished with 80 points in the 1999 title game against Illinois.
Ohio State is the third No. 5 seed to win the title and earned the Big Ten's automatic NCAA tournament bid with its ninth straight victory.
Penn State (24-9), the No. 2 seed and regular-season runner-up, was led by Mia Nickson with 17 points.
Ohio State took control with an early 9-0 run and carried a 44-39 advantage into the break. It led by as much as 63-48 early in the second half.
