SALT LAKE CITY — A Murray couple is suing a moving company for not conducting background checks on two employees who allegedly robbed them during a move in January.
A lawsuit filed Wednesday in 3rd District Court states the men had been convicted of assault, robbery and drug charges.
The lawsuit alleges that the men stole several items, including the first edition of the book "Where the Wild Things Are," which was signed by its author, Maurice Sendak. The book is valued at $35,750, the lawsuit states.
The couple is also suing for pain and suffering caused by the alleged theft of pain medications, which the couple wasn't able to replace for at least seven days because of Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing restrictions.
The couple contacted the moving company, Two Men and a Truck International, when they realized their possessions were missing after unpacking, but the company said their employees denied wrongdoing and they couldn't do anything about it, the lawsuit states.
The lawsuit requests reimbursement for the property alleged to be stolen and at least $150,000 for pain and suffering.
The company declined to comment on the suit.
