Howard Sterling Herbert 1930 ~ 2011
Howard Sterling Herbert, was born July 20, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to William Sterling and Mary Verland Woods Herbert. He passed away in St. George, Utah on March 4, 2011 at the age of 80. Howard graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City in 1948 and attended the University of Utah. He married Joy Ellinor Poulsen on April 28, 1950. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake City LDS temple on November 7, 1967. Howard is survived by Joy and their three children: Paul Herbert (Alisa), St. George, Utah; Shauna Dotter (Larry), Vernal, Utah; and Bruce (Donnette), Erda, Utah. Howard and Joy have seven grandchildren and 15 great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by his sister, LaVon Herbert Clissold. Howard was employed at Christensen Diamond Products/Norton Company for 37 years where he retired in 1985 as the Vice President of Advertising/Communication. Following retirement, Howard and Joy moved to Laguna Beach, California. In 1991, they moved to St. George, Utah. Howard had many talents. While owning rental properties, he became a plumber, electrician, painter, and carpenter. He was a talented artist and enthusiastic gardener. His grandchildren looked forward to his uniquely designed pumpkins that he created for them at Halloween. He also painted festive nutcrackers at Christmas for his family. Howard served in two bishoprics, as a high counselor, and was the Bishop of the Garden Park First Ward in Salt Lake City for five years. Howard and Joy served a two year LDS mission at the Salt Lake Conference Center from 2000 to 2002. Friends and family may call between 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Saint James Chapel, 1095 E. Saint James Lane, Saint George, Utah on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Funeral services will be held at Saint James Chapel at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. An interment service will be held at Salt Lake City Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, St. George, UT, (435) 673-2454.
