Shooting victim honored with charity game
TUCSON, Ariz. — The young girl killed in the attack on Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has been honored with a charity game between the Diamondbacks and the Chicago White Sox.
The White Sox beat Arizona 12-1 Monday in the exhibition to benefit the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Fund.
The game was played in Tucson, where the shooting occurred in January. Both teams used to hold spring training in the city.
The 9-year-old Green was among six people killed. Her father, John, who is a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and her brother Dallas threw out first pitches.
Pat Knight fired from Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas — Pat Knight is telling The Associated Press he's glad his firing from Texas Tech was handled professionally, unlike what happened when his famous father was ousted at Indiana in 2000.
Tech fired Knight on Monday, though he will coach the team in this week's Big 12 tournament. He is 50-60 in his first Division I coaching job and his third full year as head coach. He had only one winning season after taking over for Bob Knight in February 2008.
