TALON SHUMWAY, Lone Peak, basketball

On a team loaded with talent, this sophomore was the unsung hero of Lone Peak's state championship.

Even though he got off to a slow start in Lone Peak's first two games, he came up huge in the last two.

In Lone Peak's 58-55 come-from-behind semifinal victory over Fremont, Shumway came up huge with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

In the title game against American Fork, Shumway racked up 19 points and seven rebounds in a 64-52 victory.

"We've all been waiting for this for a long time. It's a better feeling than I could've ever imagined. All the older guys that have won it before, telling us how it feels, but you have no idea until it's you," said Shumway who finished the season averaging 10 ppg with 25 total 3-pointers.

After the Eagles lost to Cottonwood, it was crucial that the team find a way to win its remaining three region games — all of which were on the road.

"Abbie was our steady," said Skyline head coach Deb Bennett. "She was the one down the stretch to be that leader. She's a real hard worker. We used her to break the press, even though she was a post, she handled the ball really well."

She averaged almost a double-double in her senior season with 12 points, 8.5 rebounds and two assists. She had a huge game against Cyprus with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
