SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police here are investigating an alleged car jacking Saturday.
A man told police he was standing outside his vehicle at a car lot Saturday morning when a second man came up from behind him, claimed he had a gun and told him to get into his car, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.
Initially the man told police he was carjacked near 1700 S. State, then later told investigators it was actually near 2800 S. State, Keller said.
The man told police he was forced to drive around town for about 45 minutes to an hour before being taken to a Wells Fargo bank near 3300 S. State and forced to withdraw money from his account, Keller said.
He was then forced to drive around for another undetermined amount of time. But as the vehicle slowed down to turn near a residential area, the man saw it as an opportunity to escape and told police he jumped out of the moving vehicle, Keller said.
Police were looking Saturday for the man's 2006 teal Chevy Equinox with Utah license plate A291CP. They were also checking surveillance video from the bank and other evidence to verify the man's story.
Anyone with information on the car or the robbery can call police at 801-840-4000.
