SALT LAKE CITY – The House approved a bill Monday creating an authority to study relocating the state prison from the Point of the Mountain.
HB445, sponsored by House Majority Whip Greg Hughes, R-Draper, was substituted on the floor to change the makeup of the authority to give the executive branch the most members.
Hughes said the authority will only gather information about proposals to move the 600-acre prison to a less populated area of the state, freeing up the property for development.
The final decision will remain with Gov. Gary Herbert, Hughes said. If the governor chooses to move forward with a move, then legislative leaders would become involved.
The bill passed 73-0 and now goes to the Senate.
