At least our legislative leaders were honest — they rather bragged about implementing a back-room deal to strike down key elements of the open records laws in a non-election year so that voters would forget about it when it's time to re-elect them. And since the Legislature operates in essentially a one-party state, they have little fear of voter retribution for this take-back of citizens rights.
Essentially, their attitude is "We know what's best for you so you should trust us to do what's right — no need to examine our motives or communications with each other." Now we only get to know the results of their decisions — not how they reach them.
I have written to Gov. Gary Herbert requesting that he veto this bill. If changes need to be made to the open records laws they should be taken after careful consideration and public input — and in an election year would be best so the voters do pay attention.
