NEW YORK — Photos of a haggard-looking Dominique Strauss-Kahn handcuffed outside a police precinct were shocking to the French.

To Americans, the images were nothing special, just another perp walk.

Celebrities like Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe, professional athletes, politicians and average Joes arrested for crimes have all been captured this way — in handcuffs — outside a police precinct on their way to court by photographers and video cameras. No law prohibits the taking of the photos.

In France the images would be illegal.
