SALT LAKE CITY — A man accused of holding his girlfriend hostage was ordered to prison Monday.

Anthony Granville Whyms, 32, was sentenced to serve zero to five years in prison for possession or use of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony, and one year in prison for assault, a class A misdemeanor. Third District Judge Randall Skanchy ordered that the sentences be served concurrently.

Whyms was originally charged in March with aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, but those charges were dismissed.

Whyms' alleged victim testified at a preliminary hearing that she was tied up in a back room of her Millcreek condo and wasn't allowed to eat, sleep or use the bathroom without Whyms' permission.

Prosecutors said Whyms would sleep on a mattress near the door to prevent the woman from leaving and would only occasionally allow her to leave the room to use the restroom or to perform various sex acts. She testified that he forced her to have sex with him against her will several times, telling her that if she didn't, he would kill her 7-year-old granddaughter.
