LOS ANGELES — Bridge work on a major Los Angeles freeway is ahead of schedule, and transportation officials are considering the possibility of reopening the road early.

Officials had warned of the "Carmageddon" of epic traffic jams, but so far there have been no major problems since a 10-mile stretch of Interstate 405 was shut down at midnight Friday.

Crews finished their demolition work on the bridge Sunday morning, toppling two massive pillars hours ahead of schedule. Now they're starting cleanup efforts.

KLTA-TV reports that California Department of Transportation officials are meeting to discuss the possibility of reopening the 405 early.

The free had been scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, with on-ramps and connectors all open an hour later.
