TOOELE, Utah — Authorities say a wildfire burning in the west Utah desert is 40 percent contained and not threatening any homes or businesses.
Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Erin Darboven says the fire has burned approximately 12,000 acres about 55 miles west of Salt Lake City in Tooele County.
She says the fire started about noon Saturday, apparently ignited by target shooting in the area. High winds fueled the fire and burned 8,000 acres of BLM land the first eight hours. Higher humidity levels are helping crews from the U.S. Forest Service, BLM, and state and local fire departments. Officials expect containment by 8 p.m.
Officials say a plant owned by Magnesium Corporation of America was briefly threatened Saturday but is no longer in the fire's path.
