MAGNA — A Kennecott worker suffered first- and second-degree burns from a steam explosion Monday while working at the tailings pond west of Magna.

Unified Fire Authority spokesman Ben Sharer said the incident was not as severe as initially feared. The worker was grinding a bolt while working on a barge at the tailings pond.

The grinding heated up some liquid, which exploded and burned the man, he said. The worker was taken to University Hospital by ambulance.
