LAYTON — Kelsey Chugg fired a 1-over-par 73 on Monday to take the first-round lead in the Utah State Women's Amateur at Valley View Golf Course.

Chugg, a transfer from Redlands CC who will be a junior at Weber State, had four birdies and got to 2-under before bogeying the final three holes.

Annika Afoa, a sophomore-to-be at BYU, is a shot behind at 74, followed by Tara Green at 75 and Nicole Gaddie at 76. Two golfers, Jenteal Jackson and Emily Copier, came in at 77, while former champion Sue Nyhus shot a 78 and is tied with Selu Fotu and Mikayla Williamson. Another former champion, Lachell Poffenberger, and Morgan Workman both shot 79s, and five golfers — Morgan Workman, Jordyn Dougal, Mercede Lupinacci, Amanda Keith and Amanda Snyder — all shot 80s.

After today's round, the low 16 golfers will move on to match play, with two rounds on Wednesday.
