LAYTON — BYU golfer Annika Afoa fired her second straight 74 and captured medalist honors at the Women's State Amateur Tuesday at Valley View Golf Course.
Afoa, who will be a sophomore for the Cougars, earned the No. 1 seed in Wednesday's match play and will play Kelsey Adams at 7:30 a.m. The winner of that match will play the winner of the match between former champion Sue Nyhus and Nicole Gaddie, a sophomore-to-be at Seattle University.
Tara Green, who just graduated from Weber High School and is headed to the University of Montana, finished second at 151, while BYU golfer Emily Copier and Selu Fotu tied for third at 153. Former champion Lachell Poffenberger tied for sixth with Julie McMullin and first-day leader Kelsey Chugg, who plays for Weber State.
Two rounds of match play will be played Wednesday with the semifinals set for Thursday morning. The 18-hole final will be played Thursday afternoon.
Others who qualified for the 16-golfer bracket include Jenteal Jackson (158), Mikayla Williamson, Annette Gaiotti and Amanda Keith at 159 and Nyomy Obcemea, Amanda Snyder and Kelsey Adams at 160. The cut came at 160, leaving Mercede Lupinacci as the first golfer out, at 161.
Besides Afoa-Adams and Nyhus-Gaddie, the other first-round matches will be Fotu-Keith, McMullin-Gaiotti, Green-Snyder, Chugg-Jackson, Copier-Obcemea and Poffenberger-Williamson.
