Edward Paul Westra 1923 ~ 2011
The earthly sojourn of a great and choice man came to close on Sunday July 17, 2011. We rejoice that he has returned to the living embrace of his Father in Heaven. There are parents, brothers, sisters, son and daughter who welcomed him into their arms on this day. We are grateful to know that we will be with him again because families can be together forever. Edward Paul Westra was born to goodly parents, Ate Obe and Geeske DeHaan Westra on July 23, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from South High School, and began classes at the LDS Business College. Prior to receiving his degree, he chose to begin his service with the United States Navy. He served his country for three years with many experiences in the South Pacific. He met his eternal companion as a child, and as they grew up together they continued their courtship for many years. He married Doreen May Cobb on April 21, 1944 in the Salt Lake City Temple. During his service with the Navy he was deployed for the first few years of their marriage. He was given an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy on March 29, 1946 and began to plan for their family and future together. He was hired with Zions First National Bank and continued to work there for 20 years as an officer in the trust department. Within this time, they were blessed with four children, Kathleen, Kenneth Allen, Karen Eileen and Kyle Sterling. With his family thriving, he began his interest in Appraising. His professional designation of CPM was awarded by the institute of Real Estate Management. He had a strong desire to become an appraiser and pursued courses in appraising and real estate in early 1963. His strong desire opened doors for opportunities to gain experience in this field while he obtained his MAI designation. He worked for many years and developed a successful career. His talents of appraising were recognized throughout the state, and earned him a position as the President of the Utah Chapter of the Appraisal Institute. He was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong relationship with his Heavenly Father. He was blessed with two callings in the Bishopric in two separate wards. He was also a Scoutmaster, High Councilor and a two year calling as a Stake Missionary. He enjoyed temple work and would do so as often as he was able to. He was devoted to his family and is survived by his wife, Doreen, daughter Kathleen Mackie, son and daughter in law Kyle and Chris, granddaughters Brooklynn (spouse, Fred), Maegan, Katelyn, Lindsay, Abigail and Brittnee, great-granddaughters Cassie and Shelbie, grandson Jordan and great-grandsons Markus, Mason and Aiden. He is preceded in death by his mother Geeske and father Ate, son Kenneth Allen and daughter Karen Eileen. The family expresses deep gratitude for the warm and generous care given by Sunbrook Hospice, as well as the support from all who have known this great man. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday July 21, 2011 at the Winder 3rd Ward located at 4530 S. 1250 E. A viewing will be held at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary 4760 S.
