WASHINGTON — The United States has condemned an assassination attempt on Guinea's president and urged citizens of the African country to stay committed to democracy.

State Department spokeswoman Heide Bronke Fulton says Tuesday's rocket attack on President Alpha Conde's home was unacceptable.

She also praises Conde and his government for working hard to establish democratic institutions. Conde, who was inaugurated last year, is Guinea's first democratically elected leader.
