COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hours after South Carolina's top prosecutor said he'd referred an ethics investigation of Lt. Gov. Ken Ard to a state grand jury, the lieutenant governor said he also asked for an investigation.
The Republican first-term lieutenant governor said he asked Wednesday for the case to be given a full and complete investigation so all the facts could be determined.
But Attorney General's Office spokesman Mark Plowden said Ard's lawyer asked for a State Law Enforcement Division investigation after being told the case was being referred to the grand jury.
Ard paid a $48,000 fine earlier this month after being hit with 107 civil counts of using campaign cash for personal expenses including family vacation, iPads, a flat-screen television and clothes.
