SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's higher education system has received a $150,000 grant to start AmeriCorps Education Award Programs at nine of Utah's universities and colleges.

The grant, awarded by the Utah Commission on Volunteers, will help students volunteer for community needs in areas of education, veteran support, health and economic opportunity.

It is estimated that the new AmeriCorps programs will involve over 1,200 students and generate an additional 1,200 volunteers from the community, according to the Utah System of Higher Education.

Students participating in this program are also eligible for over $1.6 million in scholarships. The programs will be coordinated through the Utah Campus Compact, which is a coalition of Utah's college and university presidents and their campuses.
