Don "Mac" McDonald of the Jackson Ward, Lodi California Stake, has recently completed sewing 1,000 school bags to donate to the LDS Church's humanitarian efforts.
McDonald, who was baptized in 1948 when he was 29, has served in the LDS Church in a variety of callings from Primary to ward clerk. He currently serves as a home teacher.
McDonald has started on the next 1,000, which are a backpack style that some of the Relief Society members have nicknamed "Mac Pacs."

Calif. Woman serves by sewing
Marilyn Hyer first got the quilting bug while she and her husband were serving in the West Helena Branch, Memphis Tennessee Stake, in 2000. The Relief Society was asked to donate seven receiving blankets.
She made seven blankets before their deadline.
After completing their full-time mission, the Hyers moved to the Kern Valley Ward, Bakersfield East Stake, and she started sewing quilts and bedding again and donating them to the LDS Church's humanitarian efforts. With the help of ward and community members, many of whom donated their extra fabric, she has continued sewing. Also, a group spends Tuesday mornings tying quilts.
Hyer, now 81, of Santa Rosa, Calif., has made more than 1,100 blankets, quilts, shawls and afghans.
