MIDVALE — A two-alarm fire gutted the clubhouse and storage area of an apartment complex Thursday morning.
The fire, near 8000 South and 700 West, was spotted about 3 a.m. by police officers working at their headquarters next door, said Unified Fire Authority firefighter Ben Sharer.
"They saw flames coming through the roof," he said.
The apartment complex clubhouse was divided into two areas, Sharer said. Offices and a workout area were in front, and a storage area for maintenance supplies, like sinks and stoves, was in the back.
Investigators believe the fire started inside the storage area.
"The fire went into the attic, (and) through the attic it was able to get over the clubhouse area," Sharer said. "There's a lot of smoke damage in the clubhouse. The garage area is burned up. The building is probably a total loss."
There was no immediate evidence the fire was suspicious in nature, he said. But Sharer noted that it would like take investigators some time to determine a cause because of the amount of damage.
No one was in the clubhouse when the fire started, and there were no report of injury.
