EDEN, Weber County — A Salt Lake City cyclist was killed while speeding down a steep mountain road Thursday afternoon with two other cyclists — his brother and brother-in-law.

Tyler C. Soelberg, 25, apparently lost control of his bicycle while going about 40 to 45 mph as he descended Powder Mountain Rd. about one-half mile uphill from Wolf Creek Resort, said Weber County Sheriff Sgt. Ryon Hadley.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m., and Soelberg was transported by ambulance to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden where he was pronounced dead around 4:30 p.m, Hadley said. Soelberg had suffered extensive head, neck and torso injuries.

Soelberg had been staying with his parents and other family members at the resort for the holiday weekend, Hadley said, and his mother and father arrived at the scene shortly after the accident.

Powder Mountain Road, or state Route 158, is in the upper Ogden Valley near Eden and descends the mountain from the Powder Mountain ski area to the resort.

"That's a very steep road," Hadley said. "Very, very steep."

The two other cyclists were riding ahead of Soelberg when they lost sight of him for about a minute, Hadley said. When he didn't show up, they went back and found he had crashed on the west side of the road. Soelberg was wearing a helmet.

Both Weber County Sheriff and Ogden City officers and fire and paramedic units responded to the scene.
