LAYTON — A 22-year-old woman has been arrested for investigation of child abuse after a young girl in her care was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Sandra Flores was booked into the Davis County Jail Friday for investigation of child abuse.

On July 5, Flores took a 3-year-old girl in her care to Davis Hospital. The child sustained head trauma, according to police.

Flores told hospital employees the toddler slipped and fell in the bathroom, Layton police said. But doctors noted the injuries did not match a bathroom fall and called police to investigate possible abuse.

The child remained in critical but stable condition at a local hospital Friday.

Flores was a live-in friend of the victim's mother. The mother also has a 4-year-old son who lives in the house but the son does not show any signs of abuse, according to police.

The Department of Child and Family Services is assisting in the investigation.
