OGDEN — A jury Friday convicted an Ogden man of killing a man who used a racial slur and spit on him in 2009.
Robert Lee McCullar, 50, was found guilty of murder, a first-degree felony, following an eight-day jury trial. A second charge of possession of a weapon by a restricted person, a third-degree felony, was dismissed earlier in the trial.
McCullar was charged after Filiberto Bedolla Robles, 49, was found dead in his apartment on Dec. 22, 2009, with his throat slashed. Robles had also sustained numerous stab wounds.
Robles was seen with around $4,000 the day before he died, but the money was gone when the man's body was found.
McCullar apparently confessed to the crime to a number of witnesses, including a sometime-girlfriend and prostitute who worked for him. The woman, working with police, taped his account of events.
In that recording, McCullar said he killed Robles because Robles stole his cigarette and addressed him using a racial slur. Other witnesses said McCullar flew into a rage after Robles spit on him.
McCullar has a sentencing hearing scheduled for Sept. 7.
