SALT LAKE CITY — For the first time, the Deseret News 10K will feature a media competition.
Teams from KSL-TV, KSL-Radio, Media One, X96, Deseret Digital and the Deseret News will be competing in the 28-year-old race along with thousands of others.
"It was really my wife's idea," said Deseret News marathon director Bob Wood of the media challenge. "I felt like there are a lot of people who run, every corporation seems to have runners, and we just thought it would be a fun thing. It's been fun so far."
The teams are made up of three to five runners, with the top three scoring.
What do they win?
"Bragging rights and a super cool T-shirt," he said grinning.
Registration for both the 10K and marathon have outpaced last year. Monday races are traditionally the smallest for the 40-year-old marathon, but this year has turned out to be an exception.
"It's a tradition," he said of those who run the race each summer. "It's a beautiful course, especially that early in the morning."
The marathon starts at 5:30 at the top of Big Mountain above Emigration Canyon. The 10K starts at Research Park, and the Read Today 5K walk starts at the Energy Solutions Arena at 7 a.m. All of the races end at Liberty Park and run on the Days of '47 Parade Route.
"This marathon is for the esoteric," said Wood, "the people who love the idea of doing a pioneering race. It finishes at Liberty Park and all that represents. Since it started in 1970, we've had some great runners run the race, and we've had some great human beings run it."
