"WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON?" by Walt Scott, $10.95, 188 pages
Member missionary work and finding the answers to life’s greatest questions are among the topics examined in Walt Scott’s new book, “What On Earth is Going On? The World is in Turmoil! Why? Is There a Safe Harbor?”
Scott’s book, self-published in April, cites general authorities and asks thought-provoking questions in an effort to help readers feel less intimidated as they approach friends of other faiths with an LDS invitation. Using information gleaned from church converts, the book attempts to provide more comprehensive information and insight for helping investigators understand the bigger picture, Scott said.
“We should think of member missionary work as having two objectives: first, to help non-members understand us (Mormons), and second, to help prepare those who become interested to be taught by the missionaries,” Scott said. “Both are valuable objectives. Even if a person does not decided to become a member, changing them from uninformed to a friend is worth a lot. And who knows what it might lead to later?”
In his book, Scott offers answers to questions such as “Who am I?" “Where did I come from?” Why am I here?” What follows death?”
In addition to discussing member missionary work, the book presents a history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has an extensive index.
Scott invites readers to compare their beliefs with his: “Perhaps you can add something of real value to the truths you cherish,” he writes.
Scott spent most of his life in the Washington, D.C. area. He received degrees from George Washington University and MIT. He helped design and build several of the country’s satellites, the forerunners of today’s GPS systems. He also worked for NASA and co-founded Leadership Systems Inc., a company that pioneered early identification and development of leadership talent. Most recently he and his son designed and managed the construction of custom modular homes in Virginia.
Scott has served in several leadership positions in the church and is currently an assistant recorder in the Orlando Florida Temple.
