Utah Utes football: Ute uniforms more 'player friendly'

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Utes will sport a new look in their inaugural season in the Pac-12. The uniform changes, however, are subtle. So subtle, in fact, that fans in the stands probably won't notice anything different.

"The biggest thing is the comfort and the performance with the players," said Kelly Sharitt, director of equipment operations.

UnderArmour is using new high-performance stretch material on Utah's uniforms. Four different textures, each with a specific purpose, are incorporated.

Sharitt said they're more "player friendly."

Although a couple of players have posted photos of the new gear out on Twitter, the Utes plan to make them public on Saturday.

A designer used a topography map of the Salt Lake Valley as inspiration for the design. The light topography appears on the numbers, hole inserts and on the pants.

Other changes to the uniforms are a Pac-12 patch and the words "A Utah Man Am I" on the bottom of the jerseys, which will be out of sight when tucked in.

Utah's helmets are not changing and will continue to sport the familiar circle and feather logo. The only alteration is the addition of a Pac-12 logo on the back.

OPENING OF CAMP: Players report for camp today and begin practice on Thursday. Camp will consist of 20 practices and three scrimmages, concluding on Aug. 20.

The Utes will wear helmets and shorts for the first two days of camp while adhering to the NCAA-mandated five-day acclimatization period.

ROSTER WRAP: Utah will have 105 players in camp. The opening day roster includes 15 signees from the 2011 recruiting class — OL Siaosi Aiono, OL Isaac Asiata, DB Joseph Bryant, WR Anthony Denham, DE Nate Fakahafua, QB Jon Hays, WR Charles Henderson, RB Harvey Langi, DB Keith McGill, OL Daniel Nielson, RB Jarrell Oliver, WR/DB Quinton Pedroza, DB Eric Rowe, WR Travis Still and RB John White IV. The status of OL Po'u Palelei will be known later in the week.

In other news, OL Jordan Robles is leaving to serve an LDS Church mission and four others — LB Tevita Bloomfield, DL Seni Fauonuku, OL Daniel Kristensen and LB Jared Norris — are candidates to grayshirt and defer enrollment until January. One or more, however, could end up in camp. Senior walk-on running backs Shawn Asiata and Tauni Vakapuna, who left the program last spring for personal reasons, are back and on the camp roster.

TICKET TALK: Single-game tickets went on sale Monday. Seats for the Montana State, Oregon State, UCLA and Colorado games start at $45. Only single seats and standing room tickets remain for Washington and Arizona State.

EXTRA POINTS: All camp practices and scrimmages are closed to the public . . . The Ute Baseball Field will be a camp venue for the ninth consecutive year. Sessions will also take place at the McCarthey Practice Fields and Rice-Eccles Stadium . . . Quarterback Jordan Wynn will be limited to 100 throws per day for precautionary reasons early in camp. The junior starter had shoulder surgery in December . . . The annual Utah FanFest is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27.
