Christmas Day 2011 came and went with little discussion about one of the major events of the last century. Sunday was the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Many events preceded President Mikhail Gorbachev's resignation.

Viewed on TV across the world, that resignation and the change of flags at the Kremlin signaled the dissolution of the largest nation on the planet. This came about with almost no violence or tragic loss of life.

The United States also had a president who resigned 17 years before that Christmas Day in 1991. The country was challenged greatly by the resignation of President Richard Nixon and the many events that led to that sad day. Our democratic society was strong enough to survive the resignation of a president. I hope the U.S. continues to be blessed.
