PLYMOUTH, Box Elder County — A man who led Utah law enforcement officials on a car chase and then a manhunt Tuesday night was arrested late Wednesday morning at a motel in Malad City, Idaho.

Tuesday around 5 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol troopers began following what they believed to be a stolen vehicle on state Route 38 in Box Elder County, UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said. Officers continued to trail the vehicle as it entered I-15 and headed north.

As the chase continued, officials contacted the Oneida County Sheriff's Office in Idaho and requested that spike strips be set up on the freeway there. As well, a reverse 911 was sent out advising area residents to be careful and not pick up any hitchhikers.

But after driving about 11 miles on I-15, the suspect's vehicle began to run out of gas near Plymouth. The driver then drove through the median, across oncoming travel lanes, and off the west side shoulder of the freeway, according to the UHP.

Troopers were maneuvering to follow the vehicle when it came to a stop, and the driver fled the scene on foot.

"We don't know specifically, but for some reason this individual decided to flee," Johnson said.

The UHP and other law enforcement agencies set up a containment and the Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter assisted in the search. But as of midnight the suspect could not be located and the search was called off.

Wednesday morning, Oneida County Sheriff's Office received a tip that a man fitting the suspect's description had checked into a Malad City motel around 3 a.m., according to Oneida County Sheriff J.P. Semrad.

"Officers contacted the suspect at the motel and was able to obtain information that he was most likely the suspect from the night before," Semrad wrote in a press release.

Idaho officials identified the suspect as Richard Michael Quinn, 27, of Ogden, and found that he is also wanted in Chubbuck, Idaho, on a misdemeanor warrant for petit theft, Semrad said. Quinn was arrested without incident and taken to Bannock County Jail in Pocatello, Idaho.

He is being charged in Idaho with delaying and obstructing officers because he gave an incorrect name, according to Semrad.
