SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi (meer-kah-REE'-mee) will keep his job despite his conviction in a domestic violence case involving his actress wife.

Four members of the Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday night to allow Mirkarimi to remain in office. His removal would have required nine votes of the 11-member board.

The decision nearly seven months after Mirkarimi pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment stemming from a dispute with his wife, Venezuelan actress Eliana Lopez.

Mayor Ed Lee suspended Mirkarimi without pay in March. In August, the city Ethics Commission decided 4-1 that Mirkarimi committed official misconduct, setting the stage for the supervisors' vote on whether to oust him.

Prosecutors originally charged Mirkarimi with misdemeanor domestic violence but dropped that and other counts in exchange for his plea.
